THE WARM-UP

September on the bench is mostly a scheduling problem. The mornings want a jacket and the afternoons do not.

The calendar committed for us anyway: the Utah State Fair downtown, two markets on Sunday, a competition in a garden at Red Butte, and twelve straight hours of softball. Wear the jacket.

PR OF THE WEEK

PR-OF-THE-WEEK.DOC

Hoop dance at Red Butte, Saturday morning

The Intermountain Hoop Dance Competition runs Saturday morning at Red Butte Garden and Arboretum, starting at 9:30. Dancers compete inside a ring of hoops kept in constant motion, which is much easier to watch for an hour than it is to describe.

Admission is garden admission, $18 for adults. The listing does not give a child price, so I cannot tell you what the four-year-old costs. The garden is still there when the dancing ends, which is why I would take this over a free market.

If you go: Red Butte climbs uphill in every direction, so wear the shoes you actually walk in. Arrive before 9:30 rather than during it, budget the whole morning, and bring a jacket for the early hour and water for the later one.

THIS WEEK'S REPS

THURSDAY

12 - 10 PMUtah State Fair opens Thursday

Utah State Fairgrounds  $15.75 ADULTS, $10.75 AGES 6 TO 12 AND 62 PLUS, UNDER 5 FREE

Utah State Fair opens Thursday at noon and runs until 10pm at the Utah State Fairgrounds. Adults are $15.75, ages 6 to 12 and 62 plus are $10.75, and under 5 gets in free. Sort out tickets and parking before you drive down, and go early in the window rather than late.

SATURDAY

8 AM - 2 PMDowntown Farmers Market, Saturday

Pioneer Park  FREE

Downtown Farmers Market runs Saturday from 8am to 2pm at Pioneer Park, free to enter. It is a real drive from the bench, so leave early and expect to walk from wherever you park. Bring your own bags, bring cash, and eat something before you leave the house.

9 AM - 9 PMInternational Softball Showdown

Larry H Miller Softball Complex  FREE

International Softball Showdown takes over the Larry H Miller Softball Complex on Saturday, 9am to 9pm, free, come and go across the day. Twelve straight hours of softball with no ticket required. Bring a chair and sunscreen, and plan the day around whichever games you actually want to watch.

SUNDAY

9 AM - 1 PMWheeler Farm Sunday Market

Wheeler Farm  FREE

Wheeler Farm Sunday Market runs Sunday from 9am to 1pm on the farm grounds and is free to walk into. Produce, the animals, and a stroller traffic pattern you already know by heart. If you go: come in the first hour if you want the produce and the parking.

11 AM - 4 PMBazaar Market at Millcreek Common

Public Market and Plaza at Millcreek Common  FREE

Two markets land on the same Sunday. Bazaar Market takes the Public Market and Plaza at Millcreek Common from 11am to 4pm, free to browse, and overlaps Wheeler Farm by two hours. Pick one or do both with lunch between.

04

HEAVY LIFTING

Since we last talked: no closure on the bench cleared our two-signal rule this week, so we are printing none. We need two independent sources before a lane change runs here, and we will not guess at a finish date. Send what you see.
05

DROP SETS

OPEN SLOT

Fueled by nobody yet. The sponsor slot is open, and whoever takes it gets a Sponsored tag plus copy written in our voice: one place, one real detail, no borrowed adjectives. If you run something on the bench and want a Set, sponsor this slot.

06

STRAIGHT FROM THE CANYON'S MOUTH

Friday night belongs to the Farm and Sky Star Party, free, 9 to 11pm in the north parking lot at Wheeler Historic Farm. September nights on the valley floor run colder than the afternoon promises, so bring the jacket you skipped in August.

Park facing out, keep the headlights off once you are in, and let your eyes have ten minutes to adjust before you judge the sky. A red light beats a phone screen if you own one, and a blanket helps if anyone lies down.

Bring chairs, and something warm for whoever gets cold first. Clear skies are the whole variable, so check before you load the car.

07

SPOT ME

The best tips come from people who live here: a market that moved, a lane that closed, a patio putting the heaters out. Send them to the Spot Me inbox, with a date if you have one.

Which patio in Millcreek is the first to put the heaters out, and is it too early?

THE COOL-DOWN

Most clicked last week: not enough clicks to rank yet. This week's are being counted.

I went to the fair last September, ate the corn, and could not tell you one thing that happened after that. This year I am going earlier and leaving earlier.

Share this with someone who is taking a stroller to a market this weekend. Which market are you actually going to on Sunday, Wheeler Farm or Millcreek Common? Forward the Set if it earned it.

See you Sunday, between markets.

THE BENCH PRESS · SET #2

This issue was fueled by nobody yet, and it said so where it happened. Sponsorships are always labeled.

Gains: forward this to one neighbor who would actually use it.
