October starts Thursday, and the east bench has decided it is pumpkin season. Wheeler Historic Farm opened its Pumpkin Days maze on September 25 and runs it through October 31. This week has two markets, a whale and an evening of John Cage, which may be the first time anyone has put those in one sentence. Bring the jacket you swore you were done with. | Whale Fest takes over 9th & 9th SaturdayWhale Fest takes over the 9th & 9th Business District on Saturday from 2 to 7pm, centered on 1100 East and 900 South. Crafts, vendors, live music, food trucks, contests and a parade. A four-year-old gets a parade and crafts. The adults get live music and food trucks. Everyone gets a whale festival in a landlocked state. The city's schedule runs a costume contest, a whale call contest, opening remarks and the parade, with live music into the evening. Practice your whale call in the car. Nobody can hear you there. The costume contest is also the first good use all year for the whale costume you have been saving. If you go: walk or bike in if you can, and bring a bag for the crafts. |

Before Big or Little Cottonwood this weekend, check the official road status that morning. Pack a warmer layer than the valley suggests. October at a trailhead is not October on your porch. The valley forecast is not the canyon forecast this time of year. If the road report and your weather app disagree, believe the road report. Where do you take out-of-town family on a Saturday when the canyons are a parking lot? Send us the place, the street it is on and why it works. A sentence is plenty. The best ones may run in a future Set, and we will ask before printing a name. Two markets this week. We would take Friday at Millcreek Common over Sunday at The Gateway, mostly because Friday comes with live music and Sunday comes at 10am. Friday or Sunday? Reply and tell us which market wins. If neither does, the whale does. Share this with a neighbor and point them to the Bench Press signup. Re-rack the weights on your way out. |
